Bulgaria - Destination Guide

Destination Overview

Bulgaria was given its name by the Bulgars, a Turkic tribe that invaded the country in 681 AD. Over the centuries, the Bulgars were taken over by the Slavs and the country came under Turkish rule for 500 years. As a result, Bulgaria has a human landscape almost as varied as its natural landscape.* From the Danube River to mountains nearly 9000ft/3000m high and the vast Black Sea beaches, this country has a rich scenic appeal. Driver's Essentials Driver's Essentials

Set the scene
Bulgaria is one of Europe's most naturally beautiful and diverse destinations, offering both majestic mountainous landscapes and beautiful beaches. It isn't a massive place - it takes just six hours to drive across the country. But there's plenty of ground to cover by car with over 8,000 miles of road linking the major city centres. And, once you're off the major roads, you will find a network of smaller routes also weaves its way between Bulgaria's cities.
Car rental requirements
You must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) to rent a car in Bulgaria and you must have held your license for one year. Drivers under the age of 25 may be subject to a young driver surcharge. Drinking and driving is completely banned - so if you plan to drive you must be confident that your blood alcohol content is zero. Child seats are mandatory for children under the age of two.
Speed limits
Speed limits in Bulgaria are as follows:
  • City 31mph/50kph
  • Open Roads 50mph/80kph
  • Highways 75mph/120kph

Rules of the road
Traffic travels on the right in Bulgaria. Don't even think about speeding - police strictly enforce the posted speeds. Trams always have priority and pedestrians have the right of way in zebra crossings.
Fuel
Petrol stations can be found along the main roads in Bulgaria every 10-15 miles. Most are open from 6am until 10pm with some stations in Sofia open 24-hours.
Tolls
There are no toll roads in Bulgaria.
Parking
On one-way streets, drivers must park on the right. Blue Zone parking is in effect in many built-up areas and tickets must be displayed. When travelling in more rural areas, it is acceptable to park off the road.

Car Rental Insurance Car Rental Insurance

Car rental insurance varies widely, so it's important to be clear on what cover you will receive when you are reserving a rental car. And remember that the regulations of the country where you rent the car will be in effect for the duration of your rental. All Auto Europe's car rental rates include fire and third party liability insurance. Inclusive rates also provide collision and theft coverage at an advance purchase discount. You may elect to decline collision and theft coverage. If you plan to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card, please contact your card issuer directly for details. Specific insurance information for your reservation will be printed on your confirmation voucher. The following guidelines apply to rentals taken out in Bulgaria:
Required coverage
Fire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals. Third party liability insurance offers unlimited coverage in case of damage or injury to people or property outside of the rental car.
Optional coverage
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in Auto Europe inclusive rates at a discount. Super CDW may be offered locally to reduce the deductible to as low as zero. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) is also available at the rental counter. Optional insurance coverage is available with select suppliers and rates are subject to change.
