Region Pleven - short description:

PlevenGeneral characteristic of the region The district with the administrative center of Pleven is located in the central part of Northern Bulgaria, to the North it borders with the Danube River, to the West - a district with administrative center of Vratsa, to the East - district of Veliko Tarnovo, to the South - district of Lovech. The district of Pleven is the center of eleven municipalities: Belene, Gulyantsi, Dolna Mitropolia, Dolni Dabnik, Iskar, Levski, Knezha, Nikopol, Pleven, Pordim and Cherven Bryag.
The district of Pleven has a territory of 4 653.3 sq. km, which represents 4.2% from the territory of the country. According to the percentage of the areas with economy usage, which is 5.4%, the district of Pleven is the fourth one in the country after Dobrich, Burgas and Plovdiv.
The climate in the district of Pleven is moderate-continental. The average temperatures in January are -2 to -3C, the average temperatures in July +23C. There is great average annual amplitude. Some of the absolute minimal and maximal temperatures have been measured in the district of Pleven - Knezha. The annual rainfall varies - in the north and middle parts the rainfall rate is equal and a little bit more than the rate for the country. The maximum of the rainfalls is in summer, the minimum - in winter. The seasonal distribution is not equal. The average annual rainfalls rate and the duration of the snow cover confirm the moderate-continental nature of the climate. The winds are predominantly from the West, but often they could be from the North and North-East. The heavy snowfalls and the winds cause problems with drifts. The Southern winds in spring cause fast snow melting and floods.
The water potential of the region is considerable. In hydrographic aspect part of the Danube River basin is in the district and there is well developed hydrographic network. The district is drained by the rivers Iskar, Vit and Osam. The rivers are polluted and the waters from them should be treated before being used. A great number of middle and small-sized dams are built in the district. The larger of them are "Kamenets" and "Gorni Dabnik". The relief of the district of Pleven is suitable for agriculture - grain and technical crops, vineyards, vegetables.
The relief does not cause any difficulties for constructing the technical infrastructure and the development of settlements. Unfavorable phenomena are the landslips along the Danube - town of Nikopol. Mineral resources - the district is poor of mineral resources. The oil fields are depleted and without industrial importance. Nonmetallic minerals are of industrial importance - limestone near Pleven, refractory clay - Bukovlak and Opanets, chalk - Nikopol.
Aggregates are obtained from the Danube River that satisfy the needs of the district of Pleven and the neighbouring districts. The soils in the district - mainly chernozem add to the good conditions for development of agriculture. Along the rivers and the bank of the Danube there are meadow marsh soils suitable for poplars and willows. The forest resources on the territory of the district of Pleven are insignificant, without economic importance, small in areas, but many in number, dispersed as mosaic among the cultivated areas. More significant forest complexes are in the territories of the villages of Nikolaevo, Beglezh, Gornik, Reselets, Suhache, Deventsi, Radomirtsi. The forests have not only economic but ecologic and recreation significance, the forestation should be continued wherever possible. All forests are easily accessible except those on the islands in the Danube River.
